NYSDA's contract with New York State requires the Backup Center to “consult with defense attorneys, the NYS Office of Indigent Legal Services, and other members of the criminal justice community on legislative priorities and proposed criminal justice legislation; and provide advice and assistance to defense attorneys in interpreting legislation and any relevant laws.”

NYSDA meets this requirement in a number of ways. Staff attorneys are appointed to a variety of statewide committees, and NYSDA staff is often invited to give testimony at state hearings and forums.  For more information, see Advocacy.
