Law Enforcement Resources

Law enforcement policies and how law enforcement officials interact with people in the client community and with clients are public defense issues. Policing policies that affect clients’ lives and cases include arrest protocols, targeting of specific neighborhoods, and efforts, or lack of efforts, to divert people from the criminal legal system. Individual actions that affect clients’ lives and cases include manifestations of systemic racism, excessive use of force, and failure to recognize, acknowledge, or address symptoms of mental illness. The outpouring of public anger at police sparked by the death of George Floyd in May 2020 served as a catalyst at every level of government for re-examination of policing. Public defenders must be active leaders in that reexamination as well as zealous advocates for individual clients harmed by police action. Resources to aid in both endeavors are provided on the individual pages noted below and/or in the above “More in This Section” menu.
