NYSDA employs a variety of methods to address recurring and newly-surfacing problems in the justice system. Inspiration for new approaches and new applications for well-established ones arises from many sources. Public defense lawyers who call on the Backup Center for assistance often alert NYSDA to developing or reappearing issues. Clients and client community members provide information about otherwise hidden hardships; they do this by contacting NYSDA, participating in the Client Advisory Board, or speaking out publicly. NYSDA staff learn about other problems and solutions by cooperating with others in a wide range of organizations, committees, and events. At the same time, NYSDA provides information to others about the impact of issues and proposals on the quality of public defense. Current initiatives developed from observing great need and finding ways to serve those affected include NYSDA’s Veterans Defense Programimmigration work, and Public Defense Investigation Support Project. Others include the Restorative Justice Program and the Prisoner Pre-Entry Mentoring Pilot Project
