Our Work

NYSDA works in many different ways to further its mission. Improving the quality and scope of publicly supported legal representation to low income people requires efforts at both the micro and macro levels of the justice system.

NYSDA offers services to lawyers in individual cases. It provides information and consultation to county public defense programs and county entities affecting those programs. NYSDA advocates for needed public defense funding and systemic change in how the State provides mandated representation. At all levels, NYSDA seeks to identify and foster best practices; analyze new developments; and apply well-established broad principles that include the provision of client-centered representation. Our History page as well as the Reports & Studies page provide further reading regarding our work since 1967.

Many NYSDA services focus on specific practice areas.

NYSDA provides a variety of training events and resources.

NYSDA’s advocacy is far-ranging. It includes amicus briefs and other involvement in impact litigation, statewide education campaigns around public defense issues, and more. The Association’s advocacy often involves collaboration with others.
