|Client Advisory Board|
A Client Advisory Board created under NYSDA's by-laws advises the Executive Director concerning program activities. The Advisory Board includes a widespread cross-section of persons, many of whom were formerly incarcerated. The Client Advisory Board assists in the design, execution, and evaluation of community programs. It was created in 1979, when NYSDA's Board of Directors first enunciated an organizational commitment to community legal education. At that time, the Advisory Board assisted staff -- then on Long Island -- in grassroots efforts to establish a community legal education network.
The Advisory Board was also created to help NYSDA carry on a meaningful dialogue among defenders, the public, and the client community. Revitalized beginning in 1998, the Client Advisory Board assisted NYSDA in holding fact-finding hearings about public defense and promulgated the Client-Centered Standards for Representation in 2005.
The Advisory Board has engaged in efforts to help Chief Defenders create or reinvigorate local client advisory boards. More recently, the Client Advisory Board has fostered client-centered representation by advising on the development of a Prisoner Pre-entry Mentoring Pilot Project. The current Chair of the Advisory Board is Jay Coleman. The Chair Emeritus is Marion Hathaway.
