Law Student Division The next generation of public defense lawyers will be drawn from today's law students.
Encouraging and fostering in law students a strong commitment to equal justice and quality defense representation is critical to the vitality of our nation's criminal defense bar. NYSDA's Law Student Division strives to promote interest in defense services in law students by actively involving them in the Association's work. This is particularly important today when law students are rarely exposed to the defense perspective and often face huge educational loans that force many to turn down public interest work in favor of higher paying positions.
Law Student members must be currently enrolled in a law school and be in sympathy with the objects and purposes of the Association. A member of the law student division can be elected to sit on the Board of Directors of the Association.
Internships with NYSDA The New York State Defenders Association regularly seeks legal, criminal justice, information systems and other interns to work at its Public Defense Backup Center in Albany,NY. Law interns work directly with staff attorneys researching criminal defense issues, preparing legal memoranda, updating the litigation bank, assisting with publication of the monthly Public Defense Backup Center Report, and are involved in NYSDA's week long Defender Institute Basic Trial Skills Program (summer only), as well as participating in other ongoing Backup Center projects. Criminal justice interns work in the BackupCenter's Social Science Research Unit.
Applicants should be exceptional students with a demonstrated interest in public defense representation. The positions will require a full-time commitment: 40 hours per week for the summer (different schedules may apply for the fall and spring). Workstudy eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.
