Arizona: Executive Director, Arizona Capital Representation Project The Arizona Capital Representation Project is the only non-profit death penalty resource center in Arizona. The Project consults on capital cases at all stages of legal proceedings and directly represents indigent death-sentenced inmates in state and federal courts. The Project also offers free legal resources such as training seminars, sample pleadings, research materials and moot courts. The Executive Director will directly represent death-eligible indigent criminal defendants at trial, appeal, or post-conviction; consult on capital cases at all procedural stages; assist with preparation and presentation of training seminars, moot courts, research materials, legal publications and other legal resources; supervise staff members (including two full-time employees and four part-time employees); and oversee the daily operations of the organization. Connecticut: Legal Director, American Civil Liberties Union Foundation Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Legal Director manages and coordinates the organization's statewide legal program and participates in non-litigation advocacy activities. Although the primary litigation function in the ACLUF-CT's wide range of civil liberties cases will be recruiting and managing cooperating counsel (generally attorneys in private practice who volunteer to handle litigation under the direction of the ACLUF-CT), the Legal Director may also directly handle cases - or supervise the ACLUF-CT's other staff attorney in handling cases - especially in connection with pleading, discovery and emergency hearings and presenting oral arguments in state and federal courts at both trial and appellate levels. The Legal Director also works with the National ACLU litigation team in investigating and developing cases. The Legal Director will also have non-litigation advocacy responsibilities including public speaking, media interviews and outreach work, researching legal issues related to proposed legislation, and writing press releases, op-eds and newsletter articles and reports. Law Internship Program Internships are available for law students who want to gain experience in legal research and criminal law. Students can earn academic credit through Albany Law School or any participating institution. Law students work on a variety of criminal defense research projects, and participate in the preparation of case summaries for NYSDA's publications and databases. Criminal Justice Internship Program Internships are available for students who want to gain experience in criminal justice research. Students can earn academic credit through the SUNY School of Criminal Justice in Albany or any participating institution. Among its many responsibilities, NYSDA engages in the following activities: providing technical assistance to public defense providers and local, state and government officials; reviewing and analyzing public defense and relevant criminal justice research studies, reports and literature; assisting in evaluation of county public defense systems; undertaking public defense data collection, including caseload, budget and expenditure data; designing survey instruments; and assisting in reviewing and analyzing public defense legislation. The criminal justice intern works under the supervision of the Executive Director and Managing Attorney to fulfill the office's social science research needs. Library Internship Program Internships are available for students who want to gain experience in librarianship or information science. Students can earn academic credit through the School of Information Science and Policy, University at Albany or any participating library school. The Backup Center Library plays a key role in NYSDA's mission by providing research and support services to staff lawyers, public defense attorneys and government officials. Library Interns, working under the supervision of Director of Legal Information Services, will have the opportunity to interact with professional staff, government agencies, vendors and publishers. Interns will work in any or all of the following areas: reference and research, collection development, cataloging, indexing and database management, records management and space planning.
