In September of 1995, NYSDA was among the first to join a select group of defense organizations nationwide by establishing a criminal defense web site. Dedicated to serving the needs of our members and all criminal defense lawyers, the web site offered quick access to the Backup Center and NYSDA's unique resources. The web site also served NYSDA's mission to educate the public about the criminal justice system.

Conscious of the growing information needs of our members and the criminal defense community, in the summer of 1999 NYSDA reinvented its web page so that it delivers more information, on more levels, with greater speed. The new design reflects NYSDA's goal of presenting the latest criminal defense news, court decisions and legislation, while also adding substantive content from its vast collection of reports, training materials and publications.

Below are Frequently Asked Questions we have received.

1. Why is it that some articles in the Defense News, Capital Defense and Hot Topics sections are not hyperlinked?
News is time sensitive. Active links on our site may become inactive when the stories are moved into the publishers' archives. To access archived materials, you must visit the publisher's web site. There may be a fee or registration requirement. Select links to online newspaper archives appear below:

2. Why do I have trouble bringing up NY Times articles?
Some older articles may not be accessible unless you are registered with the NY Times site. Registration is free.

3. When I tried to open a PDF document hyperlink, I got a strange error message or "black" pages.
You may need to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader before viewing the document. If you are unsuccessful, contact our Webmaster with a description of the problem and the address of the page. We will contact the site administrator and advise them of the difficulty.

4. When I tried to open a PDF document hyperlink, no document came up.
If the PDF document does not appear when you choose to "Open" it, try to save the document on your hard drive by using "Save As" or "Save Target As" which can usually accessed by right-clicking to open the popup menu in your browser and selecting the command off there. Then (after the download) you can open the document which is now on your hard drive. This bypasses the browser's Acrobat plugin and runs the Acrobat program or the Acrobat Reader program directly. If this works, however, it may be an indication that you need to upgrade your Acrobat plugin to an newer version.

5. How do I find a specific word or phrase within a web page?
Use the Find command in your browser. You execute the Find command by choosing it from the pull down Edit menu or pressing (at the same time) CTRL and F (with Windows). Next, enter the word or root of the word you want to find. The program will bring you to the part of the page where the word occurs. To continue searching, click Find Next.

6. How do I find the address and phone number of a public defender or assigned counsel office, when the only information I have is the city in which it's located?
NYSDA has compiled and maintains a unique list of all the public defender and assigned counsel program offices in New York State, called the Chief Defenders List. This resource, which is in PDF format, is organized by county and offices are sorted alphabetically within each section. If you know the name of the office or the city where it's located, you can search in two ways: (1) open the Chief Defenders List and use the Adobe Acrobat Find command within your web browser to search the entire document; or (2) use the Search Site tool and enter the name of the office or its location. Also, note that public defender offices with websites are listed separately on the Chief Defenders List page.

7. Why do I have trouble bringing up New York Law Journal articles?
A subscription is required to access certain articles and resources on the New York Law Journal (NYLJ) web site. For information about subscriptions, or problems with IDs and passwords, please contact the NYLJ subscription department or NYLJ customer service.

* Please note that Public defense lawyers and members of the public who need information or assistance may contact the Backup Center by phone at (518) 465-3524
