NYSDA Expert Witness Database (web link)

This is the Association's database of experts, investigators, interpreters and other professionals who may be needed in criminal defense practice. Contact information, and where available, emails and websites for each expert are included. An expert can be found by name, topic or keyword search. Please note that NYSDA cannot vouch for the experts whose information appears here. It is up to you to verify credentials and ensure that a particular expert is right for your case. Assigned Counsel Plan Expert Roster City of New York (see Crim/Supr Experts in lower right hand column). This site contains the latest version of the verified Expert Roster of the Assigned Counsel Plan of the City of New York. The Assigned Counsel Plan has conducted a background review of the experts on this roster. The background review includes verification of the credentials of the expert. The current roster features scientific, mental health and medical experts.

Nassau County Assigned Counsel Defender Plan Experts. The Assigned Counsel Administrator for Nassau County, NY has created a list that includes over 100 experts in various fields for use by appointed counsel on behalf of their indigent clients. The list can be found in a PDF file located on the bottom of the web page linked above.

Assigned Counsel Defender Plan of Suffolk County Experts. This is a list of investigators, interpreters and medical experts in the Suffolk County area.

 

General

  • JurisPro Expert Witness Directory . This is a free web-based directory of experts arranged by area of expertise and location, and searchable by name. For each entry it provides a summary of the expert's background, contacts, and where available, links to the expert's web page, references and curriculum vitae.
     
  • Experts and Services (Martindale-Hubbell). This directory lists more than 50,000 experts and related services nationwide. It covers the following major areas: general experts, medical experts, investigators, court reporters, litigation support, attorneys and practice management services. The site is maintained by Martindale-Hubbell through LexisNexis.
     
  • Expert/Pro Search (NYSBA). This is a free expert search service that is part of a network of over 40 legal associations and major legal information portals. Searches can be done by category, specialty, location, or keyword. The site is maintained by the New York State Bar Association.
     
  • Directory of Expert Services (Vermont Office of the Defender General). This is a directory of experts concentrated in the northeastern part of the country, and a few from other areas. The specialties covered include: Alcohol Analysis, DNA, Drug Testing, Fingerprints, Firearms, Pathologist, Psychiatrist, Sociologist, and more. This site is maintained by the Vermont Office of the Defender General.
     
  • ExpertPages . This collection is organized into more than 300 expert witnesses and forensic topics, and subdivided geographically. Notable categories, subdivided into specific areas, include: Crime, Police and Penal, Documents and Handwriting, Investigative, Laboratories and Testing, Medical and Surgical, Psychiatry and Psychology, and Service Providers, e.g., bail bonds, court reporters, and more.
     
  • ALM Experts.com This is a collection of more than 15,000 experts, investigators, and litigation support professionals maintained by Law.com. It can be searched by area of expertise or name of expert. Topical browsing is available, and covers such major categories as: Criminal, Medical/Health, Sciences, Investigators and more.
     
  • Experts Database (Annapolis Group). This is a directory of more than 800 experts drawn from the faculties of US universities. The database can be searched by name, college or keyword. Contact and biographical data is available for each expert. Primarily a tool for journalists, the site is maintained by Collegenews.org under the auspices of the Annapolis Group, a nonprofit alliance of leading independent liberal arts colleges.
     
  • Experts.Com . This is a directory of experts from across the country in a variety of disciplines. Among the areas covered are: Civil Rights, Clinical Laboratory Testing, Criminalistics and Criminology, Demonstrative Evidence, Explosives, Forensic Profiling, Forensics, Investigation and Surveillance, Jails and Prisons, Medical and Medicine, Polygraph, and Psychiatry.
     
  • Expertwitness.com . This is a collection of expert witnesses nationwide. Its coverage of topics includes: Civil Rights, Corrections, Criminology, Eyewitness Testimony, Forensic Scene Examination, Jails, Juvenile Homicide, Photography, and more. Experts can be searched by name, keyword or category.
     
  • FACSNET News Sources . This is an expert database providing researchers, especially journalists, with background and contact information on professionals working in economics, science, law, and public policy. The data are based on references from news sources, academia and the private sector. Searches can be done by affiliation, name or topic. FACS is a nonprofit educational organization supporting the work of news organizations and journalists.
     
  • ISI Highly Cited Researchers (Institute for Scientific Information). This is an expert directory that contains a list of frequently cited scientific research professionals from various fields. Information is organized according to individuals, departments and laboratories. Searching and browsing are available. There is a topical directory based on 21 broad subject categories in life sciences, medicine, physical sciences, engineering and social sciences. ISI is a Thomson Scientific Company.
     
  • National Directory of Expert Witnesses (Claims Providers of America). This is an online version of a print publication, which contains more than 2,000 expert listings nationwide in over 400 categories of technical, scientific and medical expertise. Searching can be done by keyword, browsing, or by name of expert. Major categories include: Alcohol/Drugs, Audio/Video Evidence, Criminology, Dentistry, Identification, Investigation, Law Enforcement, Medicine and Health, Psychiatry, and others. The site is maintained by Claims Providers of America.

Investigators

  • Investigator Directory (ALDONYS). The Associated Licensed Detectives of New York State has created a database of their nearly 400 members. Searches can be done by specialty, area code, zip code, or last name. Full contact information, list of specialties, and web site addresses, when available, are provided.
     
  • Linguistic Interrogation Expert Services . This service provides training and consultation on interrogation techniques and statement analysis for investigators. The company was founded by Wesley C. Clark, a state police sergeant in the northeast United States who is currently assigned as a supervisor within a major crime squad.
     
  • National Association of Legal Investigators (NALI). In addition to information about NALI membership and activities, it includes a directory of more than 600 member-investigators nationwide and a list of investigative resource links. This web site is maintained by NALI, which has been in existence for over 30 years.
     
  • National Defender Investigator Association (NDIA). This is a national membership organization for indigent defense investigators. It provides information about membership, regional divisions, and training events. There is also a collection of research links.

 

Medical

  • American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). This is a collection of resources provided by ABMS, which is composed of 24 approved medical specialty boards. It includes information on the certification of medical specialties, a directory of medical boards ranging from emergency medicine to urology, and publications on certification. Most notable is their Doctor Verification Service, information about the Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists, and other services for researching board certification data.
     
  • American Medical Forensic Specialists . This is a fee-based service, primarily for civil practitioners, listing more than 6,000 medical experts nationwide. Among the specialties noted are forensics, DNA, document examination, much more; and their services include autopsies, toxicology, laboratory testing, and DNA analysis.
     
  • DocFinder (AIM). This is a portal to a large number of state medical licensing and regulatory authorities. It provides access to databases of physician profiles and disciplinary records. The site is maintained by Administrators in Medicine.
     
  • DocInfo (FSMB). This is a fee-based national databank of physician disciplinary information. The database contains more than 115,000 board actions taken against 35,000 physicians over thirty years. The site is maintained by the Federation of State Medical Boards , which is a membership organization.
     
  • dr-411 . This is a nationwide directory of nearly a million doctors and dentists in dozens of specialties and subspecialties. Each entry contains biographical and contact information. For a complete list of search results and additional information, membership or product purchase is required. The site is maintained by dr-411, which is a directory service.
     
  • Legal Nurse Consultants by State . This is a directory of legal nurse consultants who are available to review, summarize, and analyze medical records and other legal documents, as well as testify in court. Listings are organized by state and include contact information, email address, and description of specialty areas. The site is maintained by LeMed, Inc., a medical legal software company.
     
  • Medical Expert Witness Database . This is a database of medical and forensic experts worldwide. Contact information, including email and web sites, are listed. Experts can be searched by country, specialty, expertise and last name. The site is maintained by Green MedicoLegal based in the United Kingdom.
     
  • Psybar . This network provides fee-based referrals to psychological and psychiatric experts for insurance companies, law firms, courts, corporations, and government agencies. Their services include: consultation, evaluation, examinations, preparation for cross-examination, voir dire and jury selection assistance, trial strategy, and challenges to psychological and psychiatric testimony.
