Monroe County: Public Defenders
The Monroe County Public Defender's office has openings for staff attorneys. The positions are in a busy office providing criminal defense services to those unable to afford counsel as well as Family Court representation in cases requiring assigned counsel. Newly hired attorneys will be expected to handle misdemeanor cases in the local courts within Monroe County. Applicants with significant experience in representing clients charged with misdemeanors will also be considered for positions in the felony, appeals or family court sections of the office.

To be considered for appointment, all candidates must be awaiting admission or already admitted to the New York State bar. To be eligible for appointment, candidates MUST be admitted. Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. Monroe County offers an excellent benefits package including health insurance and membership in the New York State Retirement System.

To apply, submit a cover letter to the Public Defender enclosing the following information: (1) a Certificate of Good Standing from the Appellate Division of admission or a statement from the candidate indicating they passed the NYS bar examination, where they took the exam and the department in which they are awaiting admission; (2) a writing sample; (3) three references with addresses and telephone numbers; and (4) a complete resume listing all educational institutions, and a list of all employment with addresses and telephone numbers. Erie County: Family Court Trainer
The Assigned Counsel Program is hiring a full time Family Court attorney trainer. The primary responsibility will be to train attorneys representing persons entitled to public representation in Family Court matters. It will entail significant hands-on work with less experienced attorneys and intensive mentoring on selected cases. The trainer will assist the Administrator with CLE programs & other aspects of the program as directed. Occasional litigation in Family Court may be required. Significant trial experience in all areas of Family Court is also required, including Article 10 cases. Good communication/teaching skills are essential. Oneida County: Third Assistant Public Defender
The Criminal Division,
Oneida County Public Defender¥s office has an immediate opening for a Third Assistant Public Defender. The starting salary is $34,418 for the first eighteen months of service. Oneida County offers an excellent benefits package including health insurance and membership in the New York State Retirement System. TN: Legal Aid Society Executive Director
Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS) seeks an executive director.
LAS is an innovative, exceptionally effective civil legal assistance program serving residents of Middle and East Tennessee. LAS has an annual budget of $5.4 million. It has a staff of 88, including 30 attorneys, in 8 offices. LAS seeks an experienced attorney leader who is passionate about making equal access to justice under law a reality for the Legal Aid Society's diverse low-income residents. Franklin County: Assistant Public Defender
Franklin County Public Defender's Office has an immediate opening for an entry level Assistant Public Defender. New Orleans, LA: Executive Director of Orleans Public Defenders Office
The Orleans Public Defenders Board (the "Board") seeks an Executive Director for the Orleans Public Defenders ("OPD") office. The Board is responsible for providing legal representation to indigent persons in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Board is committed to establishing a client-centered office that delivers quality legal representation, consistent with national standards for indigent defense and Sixth Amendment dictates. The Director would be responsible for implementing the Board's policy as the chief executive officer at the OPD, and would assist the Board in developing long-term policy goals. NYSDA Internship Programs
The New York State Defenders Association is a not-for-profit, membership organization that has been providing support to New York's criminal defense community since 1967. Its mission is to improve the quality and scope of publicly supported legal representation to low-income people. NYSDA operates the Public Defense Backup Center, which is a legal research and support center for New York public defense attorneys. The Backup Center also works under a contract from the state to "review, assess and analyze the public defense system" and to make specific recommendations to the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government.

  • Law Internship Program
    Internships are available for law students who want to gain experience in legal research and criminal law. Students can earn academic credit through Albany Law School or any participating institution. Law students work on a variety of criminal defense research projects, and participate in the preparation of case summaries for NYSDA's publications and databases. During the summer, law student interns are eligible to work along with staff and observe NYSDA's Basic Trial Skills Program for new attorneys. Send a cover letter, resume and writing sample to:

  • Criminal Justice Internship Program
    Internships are available for students who want to gain experience in criminal justice research. Students can earn academic credit through the SUNY School of Criminal Justice in Albany or any participating institution. Among its many responsibilities, NYSDA engages in the following activities: providing technical assistance to public defense providers and local, state and government officials; reviewing and analyzing public defense and relevant criminal justice research studies, reports and literature; assisting in evaluation of county public defense systems; undertaking public defense data collection, including caseload, budget and expenditure data; designing survey instruments; and assisting in reviewing and analyzing public defense legislation. The criminal justice intern works under the supervision of the Executive Director and Managing Attorney to fulfill the office's social science research needs.   • Library Internship Program
    Internships are available for students who want to gain experience in librarianship or information science. Students can earn academic credit through the School of Information Science and Policy, University at Albany or any participating library school. The Backup Center Library plays a key role in NYSDA's mission by providing research and support services to staff lawyers, public defense attorneys and government officials. Library Interns, working under the supervision of Director of Legal Information Services, will have the opportunity to interact with professional staff, government agencies, vendors and publishers. Interns will work in any or all of the following areas: reference and research, collection development, cataloging, indexing and database management, records management and space planning. Public Interest Employment

There are several sites that post public interest positions exclusively, while other general sites may contain a section devoted to such jobs.

General Legal Employment

Legal newspapers, bar associations, commercial publishers and private organizations post job listings in many areas of law including public defense.

Academic Resources

Career Centers at Law Schools are often a good source of current job information in the public sector. Some provide only general information, others complete job listings, clerkship and internship positions. Many are limited to alumni and students only.
